Algis Bubnys

Born in Lithuania, schooled in the U.S. and Canada, Algis has been potting for close to 40 years.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Fine Arts from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado in 1967. He taught pottery at Churchill Secondary School, Vancouver B.C. from 1969 to 1971, worked for Lambert’s Pottery in Vancouver from 1972-75. He opened his own studio, Ravenhurst Pottery in 1974, moving to Vancouver Island in 1981.

During this period he was exploring various techniques, types of pottery and firing.

He has done electric fired earthenware and stoneware; gas fired stoneware; wood firing, raku and salt glaze. “I love all types of pottery and I love seeing them swirled in flames and gases in the kiln. That’s my favorite; you might say that I’m a bit of a pyromaniac.”

Algis renamed his studio ’Nighthawk Pottery’ in 1991 after a casual comment about his work habits from another potter. He was instrumental in the foundation, in 1995, and the running of the Arrowsmith Potter’s Guild in the old E&N Railway Station, Parksville. The Guild is a teaching guild with classes and facilities available to local hobbyists and professional potters alike, as well as a gallery space for the members to show and sell their work.

After coming to the Island, Algis has been constantly teaching pottery and related techniques; i.e. throwing, glazing, raku and other firing methods at his studio, the Arrowsmith Guild, at functions sponsored by local art associations or the BC Potters Guild. He is an approachable and knowledgeable mentor to many local amateur and professional potters al
